New South Wales and the Great War

A visually arresting and authoritative account of NSW during and after the Great War
— His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley, Governor of NSW

Three years ago Longueville Media was delighted to be commissioned by the New South Wales Centenary of Anzac Committee to be the publisher on a major history book for our State: New South Wales and the Great War

This accessible and visually stunning social history provides an unusual angle for a history of the Great War in that it looks at the impact of the war on those at home and those fighting abroad. A major and important driver for all involved in creating the book was that it would be a commemoration, rather than a glorification of war. In this respect it is a unique book that collects little-known or untold stories from the period alongside coverage of the major military events and campaigns.

Leafing through its' pages is more like the experience of visiting a museum than settling down with a book. It comprises 52 double-page spread chapters that combine text, images of artefacts and objects from public and private collections, and photographs – many of which are previously unpublished.

Written by Dr Naomi Parry and senior historian at the NSW Anzac Memorial, Mr Brad Manera, with Professor Stephen Garton and historian and author Will Davies as advisors, New South Wales and the Great War. A large format coffee-table book style, it employs rich visual and written records from the state's repositories to reveal the impact of war on the ordinary citizens of NSW, in theatres of combat and at home in our cities, towns and rural communities.

The book was launched by His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d) at Government House, Sydney in late 2016. At the launch, the Governor expressed his delight that a copy of the book is being gifted to every school and library across the State.

New South Wales and the Great War is available in bookshops nationally or online through Booktopia.
